This publication contends that US President Trump’s administration will likely reinforce its “America First” policy in the near future. This is partly as the current political situation makes it unlikely that the usual checks and balances in the US, namely Congress, will moderate the agenda of the administration. As a result, the author explains that political and economic decision makers in Europe and beyond should take this policy seriously, including its resulting protectionist measures and potentially negative impact on multilateral organizations including NATO, the UN and the WTO.
