This report examines the Australian defense budget, as outlined in the country’s 2016 Defence White Paper, and the policy choices its entails. More specifically, the text’s author examines 1) the strategic, political and fiscal context within which Canberra produced the budget; 2) the state of defense spending and defense management in Australia; and 3) the actual details of the defense budget, which provide a window on other security-related issues. (The latter include defense reform; international defense spending trends; the status of the Australian defense industry; the country’s foreign aid policy; defense contracting, etc.)
