This paper contends that the primary cybersecurity threat posed by China to the West emanates from the Chinese People's Liberation Army’s Strategic Support force (PLA SSF). Key contentions include 1) that the extent of the PLA SSF to spy on information and communication technologies is second only to the US‘ National Security Agency; 2) China is catching up with the US fast; and 3) this trend should guide the EU’s decision regarding the selection of future 5G networks and how to mitigate the threats they could pose.
