This paper explores the long-term strategic trends facing Australia and how to reconcile their conflicting demands. The Australian security apparatus must cope with both the threat of transnational terrorist actors as well as the potential for instability in the Asia-Pacific region requiring conventional ground, naval and air forces. The author encourages the acquisition of dual-use hardware and questions Australia's disproportionate reliance on the US when it comes to security.
