This paper examines the issues that characterize volatile Australia-Indonesia relations. The author notes that Indonesia’s democratic reforms are bringing the two countries’ political systems into line, however, Australia’s support for East Timor and interest in the Papuan self-determination struggle generate suspicion. Similarly, Islamic political mobilization in Indonesia concerns Australians. The author concludes with prescriptions to ameliorate relations and cautions against leaving problems unaddressed.
