This publication reflects on the role of China in the Persian Gulf. Key insights include 1) that with all attention focused on the US-Iran dispute, China is rapidly consolidating a dominant presence in the Persian Gulf with the active support of Russia; 2) Beijing is fast acquiring immense influence over related key dynamics such as the price of oil in the world market and the relevance of the petrodollar; 3) China’s success in this arena can be attributed to what Beijing can offer both Iran and the Saudi-Gulf States camp as well as key leaders’ decisions to downgrade their traditional close ties with the US, and more.
