This report considers political conditions in Tajikistan following the civil war from 1992-1998. It argues that the Russian presence in Tajikistan is instrumental in maintaining stability. An emerging drug trade, however, threatens the durability of the 1997 peace accords, and if not restricted, may bring about the fall of the government. Moreover, the author points to growing economic hardship and unabated corruption and patronage in the state administration as a source of fuel for religious extremists.
