This Master thesis addresses the integration of the states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in the EU focusing particularly on Austria. It outlines the positions of the Austrian government as well as those of Austrian political parties regarding European integration. Special attention is given to the Austrian referendum campaign in 1994 and the concurrent debate on the Austrian economy, identity and neutrality. Finally, the author assesses the evolution of these aspects after 13 years of Austria's EU membership.
