This paper discusses how Afghanistan has risen to the top of the international agenda. It describes the resurgence of the Taliban since the US-led invasion of 2001 and the deteriorating political environment in Afghanistan. The author concludes that a change in strategic thinking on Afghanistan is needed, but the entire region will inevitably remain a source of instability until security conditions can be improved and political solutions found across South Asia.
