This working paper investigates possible linkages in Muslim countries between level of education, opinion of the role of Islam in politics and other variables, with support for terrorism. The author finds that two of the strongest correlates of support for terrorism are the respondents' attitudes to the US as a threat to Islam, and their view of the role of Islam in politics - however, these correlations are relatively weak. The author cautions against simple causal inference, as the complexity of the issue leads to difficulties in correctly ascertaining the direction of causality among the variables.
