This paper examines how China's rise affects Australia's long-term security and strategic posture. The author argues that although China's rise is not a given, it is the most likely and consequential long-term trend in the region and will likely signal the end of western strategic primacy in Asia. This, the author adds, will place an unprecedented burden on Australia to reconfigure its strategic posture and prepare diplomatically and militarily for an Asian Century. The individual chapters address expectations, strategic risks, strategic objectives, capability choices, defense finances and political calculations.
