In February 2020, the US and the Taliban reached an agreement in Doha over the conflict in Afghanistan. This paper addresses the US position in the country and Afghanistan’s future. Key contentions include that 1) while the US continues to focus on the legitimacy of the government in Kabul, most of Afghanistan’s tribal groups reject the very idea of a viable centralized government; 2) US and NATO forces in Afghanistan are drawing down as their governments have given up on winning against the Taliban; 3) the Doha agreement is not a peace treaty and, more than this, it undermines the modern centralized Afghan state, and more.
