This article contends that the digitization of contemporary life is both a bane and a benefit to diplomats. On the debit side, three problems standout – 1) the wealth of information that’s now available, which robs decision-makers of the ability to contextualize a given problem; 2) the sheer rapidity of modern communications, which deprive diplomats the time they need to formulate well-considered judgments; and 3) social media, which is proving itself to be no friend of ‘strategical needs’. So how might one ‘tame’ all these problems? Awareness is an important first step, says the text’s author.
