This report explores the role of religion and engagement with religious actors in the context of efforts to counter violent extremism (CVE). It also offers practical guidelines for policymakers and practitioners seeking to better understand the role of religion in violent extremism and best practices for partnering with religious actors to further CVE efforts. Key recommendations outlined for such actors include 1) avoid endorsing particular interpretations of religion; 2) think beyond ‘old men’ in churches and mosques; 3) do not let CVE become a pretense for prohibiting religion, and more.
