The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is set to become a prominent arena for 21st century power disputes. This paper offers an Indian perspective on rising geopolitical tensions in the IOR, focusing on both maritime balances of power as well as India’s relations to other littoral states. Against this backdrop, the author specifically points to two potential sources of future conflict: 1) the region’s significance as a key passage for East Asian oil and gas transports and 2) the emergence of a new maritime order due to the economic rise of both China and India.
