This publication deals with Japan’s COVID-19 mitigation regime and Aegis Ashore, a cornerstone of Japan’s ballistic missile defense. The text’s author argues that the medical service of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces has contributed substantially to successfully handling the pandemic. Nonetheless, the national fiscal constraints caused by mitigating COVID-19‘s impact may have contributed to the unexpected announcement by Japan’s ministry of defense on 15 June 2020 to halt Aegis Ashore due to unsolved safety issues and budget overrun concerns. The author suggests that this decision affects Japan’s defense posture and the Japan-US military alliance and it makes finding a balance between the nation’s security and the safety concerns of Japan’s citizens more difficult.
