This paper contends that the aborted military coup in Turkey (15-16 July 2016) represented a desperate attempt to reverse the history of the country and revive the legacy and spirit of Atatürk. Unfortunately for the plotters, the Westernized Turkey Atatürk established ninety years ago is no more. Indeed, the military’s failure in the face of Recep Erdoğan’s Islamicized grassroots supporters will most likely herald a new era of audacious Turkish sponsorship of pan‐Turkic, neo‐Ottoman insurrections and jihadist activities from the Balkans in the west to the heart of China in the east.
