This publication provides a firsthand account of the negotiations that led to the 2016 peace agreement between the Afghan government and the Hezb-e Islami militant group. More specifically, the publication outlines 1) the context in which the peace negotiations took place; 2) the internal consensus and divisions concerning the peace talks in both camps; 3) the components of the peace deal; 4) how the deal was sealed and implemented, and more. The text’s author also examines the lessons these negotiations hold for future peace negotiations with the Taliban.
