This paper notes that external intervention in civil wars tends to prolong such conflicts. Further, the text’s author argues that Syria is no exception, where the Syrian government is supported by Iran, Hezbollah and Russia, and the Syrian armed opposition is supported by the US, certain NATO members, Israel, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The text also looks at the risks of further escalation and the conflict spilling over into a broader arena, particularly in light of calls from Turkey for the US to increase support for the forces it supports in Idlib.
