This article highlights Myanmar’s struggle to create a domestic political framework that can promote stability and economic growth, and simultaneously meet the aspirations of the country’s diverse ethnic population. Among other issues, the text’s author explores 1) the political evolution of Myanmar since it gained independence in 1948; 2) the country’s Communist insurgency and its legacy; 3) the governance and nation building challenges created by the country’s current constitutional arrangement, including the military’s parliamentary role, and more.
