This paper explores the reasons for Japan’s apparent resistance to the anti-globalization movement. Although the country shares many of the key factors that fuel anti-globalization sentiments in other nations, the author identifies four distinct features that explain why the movement has failed to gather similar momentum in Japan, including 1) strong middle-class consciousness; 2) faith in free trade; 3) the absence of key actors spreading the anti-globalization message; and 4) a relatively small number of immigrants. However, the author also casts some doubt on whether Japan’s support for globalization will continue in the future.
