This publication contends that Iran has effectively won the struggle for the future of Iraq against Iraq’s anti-Iranian Shiite Arab populace. Indeed, he suggests that even though Iraq’s May 2018 elections are still being contested, the key outcome is clear: pro-Iran Shiites will dominate any future government in Baghdad. The author contends that this triumph serves as a major step in Tehran’s effort to consolidate a land corridor to the Mediterranean. He also addresses what this means for Iraqi Kurdistan and the country’s Kurdish minority, including the point that neither Iran nor Turkey will accept a Kurdish entity — or what this would mean for their regional influence — along their borders with Iraq.
