This bulletin outlines 1) the converging regional interests between the Philippines and Australia; 2) Canberra’s pursuit of closer ties with Manila; and 3) President Duterte’s impact on the relations between the two countries. The text’s authors specifically contend that until recently the main impediment to Australia-Philippine relations used to be Manila’s territorial dispute with China. The problem now is Duterte’s unpredictable policymaking.
