Social media platforms and services have become both the object and the instruments of security-oriented initiatives. Their capabilities are exploited by law enforcement, security and public safety agencies for managing crisis and emergencies, policing as well as conducting intelligence activities dealing with terrorism, crime and more. This chapter reviews such initiatives and addresses some of the relevant governance implications they raise. In particular, it does so by looking at the policy frameworks that govern the employment of social media for security in the EU and Italy as well as related security discourse.
