The ongoing technical transformation, centered around artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data and other emerging technologies is expected to have fundamental impacts in many areas. In their contribution to this book, Andrea Gilli and CSS' Mauro Gilli argue that existing worries about the implications of emerging technologies for nuclear stability are largely exaggerated. They further investigate how artificial intelligence and advances in counterforce will affect the evolution of second-strike capabilities identifying three main trends. Lastly, the authors discuss how increasing automation will enhance the role of human beings at different levels of policy.
