Switzerland is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its membership in the Council of Europe. This organisation makes an indispensable contribution in the field of human rights. At the same time, critics say that the Council of Europe is not ufficiently effective, too disordered on matters of substance, and has too many redundancies with other international organisations. Since 2010, the Council of Europe and its most visible institution, the European Court of Human Rights, have been undergoing reform. The success of these reforms will also determine the continuing relevance of the Council of Europe for Europe and Switzerland.
