The extreme caution with which European states have reacted to Russia's recent role in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine is linked to the continent's dependence on Russia for its gas imports. This dependency poses security risks for Europe, which are magnified by attempts of Russia's Gazprom to hold sway over Europe's gas deliveries.
