Proud to Sponsor BRISMES 2012

8 Jun 2012

As the final outcome of the Arab Spring remains uncertain, we are pleased to sponsor an event that sheds light on the profound changes impacting upon the Middle East.

The political unrest and instability still plaguing Egypt, Syria and elsewhere suggests that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are likely to remain complex and volatile political regions for the foreseeable future. Indeed, making useful predictions as to what the region will look like after all the dust has settled requires a comprehensive understanding of the social, economic and political factors that underpin this region. For this reason, we are proud to be sponsoring the 2012 BRISMES Graduate Section Annual Conference at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The conference, entitled Change and Continuity in the Middle East: Rethinking West Asia, North Africa and the Gulf after 2011, features four panel sessions that zero in on specific case studies. After first analyzing why some MENA countries have proven to be impervious to both political unrest and change so far, the second panel focuses on the actual changes in the region and how they might impact diverse issues such as the Palestinian question, social activism in the region, and the regional outlooks of Turkey and Iran.

Panel 3, in turn, continues the conference’s eclectic approach. It considers what the Arab Spring has meant and continues to mean for British and American foreign policy, and how it has impacted the art, culture and religious beliefs of the MENA region. The latter topic then dovetails nicely with Panel 4’s analysis of the roles online and social media have played in shaping events associated with the Arab Spring.

As with all other significant international relations-related events, we will be providing you with comprehensive coverage of the 2012 BRISMES Graduate Section Annual Conference. Not only will we provide you with an overview of key findings, we will also present a selection of sound-bites from a host of keynote speakers.

Change and Continuity in the Middle East: Rethinking West Asia, North Africa and the Gulf after 2011 takes place on Monday 11th June and is co-hosted by the LSE’s Middle East Centre. The Conference program, location and registration events can be accessed external pagehere.
