EISA Young Researchers' Workshop 2013
12 Sep 2013
In June 2011, the members of the UN Human Rights Council unanimously endorsed the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. In practical terms, this means that participating states not only need to prevent human rights violations by corporations and businesses, they also need to provide after-the-fact remedies or compensation for those whose rights are violated.
The problem, of course, is that the above norm is relatively new. How to prevent corporate human rights violations, rectify them, or compensate those who endure them remains very much a work in progress. That is why EISA conducted a Young Researchers' Workshop on this topic in Warsaw, Poland, on September 17, 2013. The title of the workshop may have been thorough -- “The State Duty to Protect from Business-Related Human Rights Violations: Tracking the Emergence and Impact of a New Norm” -- but its purpose was straight to the point. Young scholars from multiple fields of study came together to investigate the emergence and possible effects of this relatively new and evolving norm.
As in previous cases, the ISN was proud to promote the professional development of budding young scholars in a workshop setting. And as in the past, the best papers presented at the event are now available in our Multimedia Library for your use.
