This publication notes that since the start of Vladimir Putin's presidency, over 1.6 Russians have left for Western democracies. In response, the text’s authors look at what this means for Russia and the West, finding 1) that while the new Russian émigrés live in different locations, they are very similar in the way they use their high cultural capital to adapt to new life and employment in postindustrial societies; and 2) there is a distinct disparity between those who emigrated before 2012 and those who left later: among other things, the latter demonstrate a growing pro-Western and liberal orientation and greater politicization in general.
