This brief considers the problems facing democracy promotion in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in light of the growing regional power of China. More specifically, the text author first looks at political practices in states with electoral contestation in Northeast and Southeast Asia. He then turns to current patterns of democratic promotion initiatives in the region, and addresses the prospects for enhanced collaboration between the democratic nations of the Indo-Pacific to counter rising Chinese influence that is undermining democracy.
