According to this brief, Philippine President Duterte does not hate the US and will not join China in an anti-American bloc. Rather, the president’s recent pronouncements reflect the changing values in some of Asia’s emerging democracies – i.e., values that privilege the principles of noninterference and respect for the sovereignty of others over democracy and an insistence on human rights.
