In this text, Nathan Brown explores the modern roots of the Arab world’s ‘religion-state complex’. While Arab regimes may hold sway over official religious structures, their ability to bend these institutions to suit their own purposes remains a mixed bag, primarily because of the region’s complex religious landscape. This complexity is especially troublesome, Brown observes, when it comes to formulating effective anti-extremist strategies.
