This paper reviews Iran’s policies towards its large Afghan refugee and migrant population, which include turning the group into a geopolitical bargaining chip. The text’s author specifically discusses 1) how the wrangling over Iran’s nuclear program negatively affected Iran’s “guests”; 2) how the Iranian regime has coerced resident Afghans to fight in Syria on behalf of the al-Assad regime; and 3) what steps the EU should take to help deal with this displaced population’s problem.
