This monograph features a collection of essays that highlight the impact MIRVs had during the first nuclear age, and what China, India and Pakistan might do with this multiple warhead technology in the future. The essays particularly focus on 1) the geopolitical reasons why the US initially deployed MIRVs; 2) the impact this technology had on the US-Soviet strategic relationship; 3) China’s eventual shift to MIRV’d systems; 4) the drivers that could push India to incorporate MIRV technologies into its nuclear arsenal; and 5) how Pakistan’s enduring rivalry with India is likely to provoke it to deploy multiple-warhead missiles as well. The final essay speculates on the impact MIRVs might have on future nuclear arsenals, to include their growth.
