This report presents an updated and expanded version of PRIO’s Urban Social Disorder (USD) dataset. The dataset provides a record of 9,018 urban social unrest events, such as demonstrations and riots, in capitals and other major cities across the developing world from 1960-2014. The text’s authors also 1) identify trends in urban social disorder highlighted by the dataset; 2) compare the USD data with other conflict event datasets; and 3) look at whether or not findings drawn from the original dataset can be replicated when taking account of the updated data.
