This paper discusses the divisions of opinion that exist over whether the EU should grant Market Economy Status (MES) to China. Two significant problems are that 1) market conditions in the Asian nation “leave much to be desired,” and 2) the Chinese government has yet to implement effective political, legal, and economic strategies to win greater support for its cause.
