This paper examines the potential impact the Brexit vote might have on the free movement of people requirement in the EU. While the negotiations between the UK and Brussels may ensure the former gains access to the European Economic Area or acquires some form of ‘Special Status’, the text’s author argues that the talks could also prompt renewed haggling over wider freedom-of-movement reforms. However, since such reforms would almost certainly generate conflicts between eastern and western EU member states, the author believes the best way to avoid this inevitable problem would be to grant Britain a special status as a key EU trading partner.
