This paper examines Bulgaria’s attempts – after its November 2016 presidential election – to balance its foreign policy interests between its EU partners, Russia and Turkey. More specifically, Bulgarian authorities are particularly interested in improving relations with Russia in order to balance Turkey’s influence in the Black Sea region. The rapprochement could involve Russia’s participation in new energy projects, which would strengthen Sophia’s political position and secure further investments for Bulgaria.
