This report explores the movement of 'undocumented' African migrants from sub-Saharan through north Africa, with the aim of reaching Europe. The author explores why migrants undertake the journey, the conditions under which they move, and how they are received and perceived in north Africa as well as at their destinations in southern Europe. The report examines why African migrants and emigrants take risks, showing the role of lack of opportunity and an idealized image of Europe. It concludes with policy recommendations.
