This paper reviews and analyzes the multiple layers of formal and informal political leadership in Africa. It also addresses new indications of transactional and transformational leadership on the continent as illustrated by the African Union (AU), the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Peer Review Mechanism. It then examines aspects of political leadership relating to actors, issues (such as the nature of features of leadership and leadership renaissance), trends (the militarization of leadership) and the imposed and self-imposed context (the postcolonial and the AU) of political leadership in Africa.
