This report provides a review of all forms of armed conflict in India for the year 2008 including separatist movements, left-wing extremism and religious fundamentalism. In this text, the word 'militant' refers to groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir and, to a large extent, in the Northeast, while the word 'extremist' refers to groups in the Naxal-affected areas. India has been declared the second worst-affected country by terrorist violence after Iraq by the US State Department's Annual Report 2007. This is due to the high terrorism-related casualties in 2008 with over 1000 civilian deaths, the author states.
