This note discusses the roles of young women in African wars. It argues that it is necessary to broaden the understanding of young women’s roles and participation in armed conflict in Africa to improve policy and programing efforts. For instance, it notes that disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) programs often fail to address the needs of young women and in a variety of ways prevent them from partaking.
