This note explores the possibility that geographical indications (GIs) can be used to support economic development in developing and least developed countries (LDCs). It investigates the 2005 Starbucks/Ethiopian coffee producers trademark row to assess arguments in favor of protecting indigenous knowledge under international trade rules as a linchpin for economic development and poverty eradication.
