This paper deals with the engagement in non-agricultural activities in rural areas that can be classified into survival-led or opportunity-led. While the former is said to decrease inequality and reduce poverty, the latter is expected to increase inequality and have a minor effect on poverty. The authors find evidence for the existence of the differently motivated diversification strategies. However, their results indicate that in addition to asset constraints, rural households also face limited or relatively risky high-return opportunities outside agriculture.
