This policy paper examines the privatization of security and the activities of private military and security companies (PMSCs) contracted by First World states in Africa. The author explores both the practical implications and legal groundings of this phenomenon. He argues that African states, the AU, policymakers and relevant research institutes have so far failed to engage with the issue, resulting in an unregulated and uncontrolled industry taking part in conflict and post-conflict situations. The author also provides recommendations to the AU Commission.
