This paper analyzes how long trade union membership lasts and what the determinants of its duration are. The author thereby shows that union membership is a dynamic phenomenon as opposed to a static situation. Applying survival analysis to a sample of 48,705 workers, he finds that membership duration is a positive, though declining, function of age. Furthermore, he argues that women, "flexible" workers, foreign workers and those working in cities tend to show less attachment to unions than the other workers.
