This paper examines the gains from productivity and knowledge transmission arising from the presence of foreign firms taking into account mechanisms on the micro-foundations. The authors compare the effect of training for workers who teach themselves by temporarily withdrawing from the workforce with workers who are taught by foreign experts. They analyze how production, training and welfare depend on the cost of foreign experts and the learning capacity of the domestic economy.
