This paper argues that the South African security forces need to adjust to the new security threats of the 21st century, which are characterized mostly by intra-state conflicts caused, for example, by competition over resources and the impacts of climate change. Meanwhile, the threat of conventional war has declined for South Africa. As a result, the author argues, the South African army should primarily serve as a force for crisis prevention and crisis intervention.
