This paper analyzes the speech on US policy towards Islam and the Middle East delivered by US President Barack Obama at the University of Cairo at the end of May 2009. It assesses the main elements of the speech and the likely impact on the diverse target audiences. The author then relates it to US policy toward the region and how this may develop in the months following the speech.
